The emphasis on improving the Oklahoma football defense took another positive step over the weekend with a fourth defensive back commitment for 2021.

Three-star prospect Damond Harmon, from Highland Springs, Virginia, announced his commitment to the Sooners on Saturday. Harmon’s commitment is further reflection of the emphasis defensive coordinator Alex Grinch has placed on adding size and length to the Oklahoma defensive secondary.

Harmon becomes the 13th commitment in Oklahoma’s 2021 class and the ninth defensive player. All three of the defensive backs are over six-feet tall. Harmon, who stands 6-feet, 1-inch and 180 pounds joins four-star prospect Latrell McCutchin, (6-foot, 1-inch, 175 pounds), Caleb Johnson  (6-foot, 180 pounds) and 6-foot, 4-inch, 195-pound  Jordan Mukes.

McCutchin, Johnson and Harmon have all committed to the Sooners in the last month. Mukes was the fourth Oklahoma commitment for 2021, pledging to OU in late March.

One of the things the Sooners really like about Harmon is his versatility. They believe he can play corner or safety.

Harmon chose Oklahoma over offers from Georgia, South Carolina, Penn State, Tennessee and others.

Oklahoma 2021 class is ranked 15th in the latest Rivals team rankings and 14th by ESPN.

“I felt like I was home on my virtual visit,” Harmon told Adam Friedman, a recruiting analyst for Rivals.com. “I felt like I fit in perfectly with their (defensive) scheme.”

Harmon said he talked with fellow OU commit McCutchin a couple months ago, and “me and Mario (Williams, a five-star WR) and Caleb Williams (the No. 1 QB in the 2021 class, who’s also committed to Oklahoma) have been talking, too. I feel like I fit in great with the guys…I feel like we could be the class to take Oklahoma over the top.”

Lincoln Riley and the OU coaches are also hoping that Harmon’s commitment will help them gain a follow-up commitment from four-star defensive tackle Kevin Gilliam, Harmon’s high school teammate, according to Ryan Aber of The Oklahoman.
