Oklahoma football: Defenders Tre Brown, Caleb Kelly on national award watch
By Chip Rouse
Oklahoma football defensive players Tre Brown and Caleb Kelly have joined the group of Sooners who are in preseason consideration for national award honors.
Brown, a senior cornerback, has been named to the Paul Hornung Award watch list, and Kelly, a redshirt senior linebacker, is a contender for the Wuerffel Trophy.
The Hornung Award recognizes the most versatile player in college football. Brown is one of 50 players who are in consideration for the award.
The Wuerffel Trophy , which honors college athletes who are serving others while achieving greatness on the football field and in the classroom, is a more extensive watch list, with more than 100 players in consideration, including 14 from the Big 12.
Brown was credited with 40 tackles last season along with one of the Sooners’ seven interceptions and 11 pass breakups. In addition to being a starter in the OU secondary the past two seasons, the Tulsa-native has served as the Sooners’ primary kickoff returner since his sophomore season
The Paul Hornung Award has been presented annually since 2010. No Oklahoma player has ever won the award.
Kelly, who hails from Fresno, California, missed the first 10 games of the 2019 season while recovering from a foot injury sustained in spring practice. He returned to action in the final four games last season, recording seven tackles.
Only one Sooner is a previous winner of the Weurffel Trophy: center Ty Darlington in 2013. Trevor Knight, a former OU quarterback (2013-15), also won the award, but it was as a member of Texas A&M in 2016, the year after his former Sooner teammate Darlington.
