The Oklahoma football 2021 recruiting class grew to 12 with the commitment on Thursday of a three-star defensive back.
Caleb Johnson, a cornerback from Greenville, Texas, is rated by Rivals as the 58th player at his position in the 2021 class and becomes the third defensive back in the Sooners’ 2021 class.
Johnson, who lists at 6-feet, 180 pounds, is a two-sport athlete in high school in both football and track and field. In track, he competes in the 100 and 200 meters as well as the triple jump and long jump, which demonstrates both his speed and athleticism.
Speed in the secondary and in the overall Sooner defense is one of the features OU defensive coordinator Alex Grinch and cornerbacks coach Roy Manning are especially looking for in future defensive recruits.
He is the eighth defensive player to pledge to OU in the 2021 recruiting cycle.
As a junior, Johnson was named a Texas District 8-5A-II second-team selection as a receiver. , Although he has good offensive numbers, Johnson was recruited by Oklahoma to play cornerback.
Johnson selected Oklahoma over some big-name SEC programs, including Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Texas A&M, Missouri, Tennessee and LSU. In Big 12 Country, TCU extended him a scholarship offer.
Johnson is the third OU commitment in the month of July. He follows pledges earlier in the month by another Caleb, No. 1 dual-threat quarterback Caleb Williams, and four-star cornerback Latrell McCutchin, from Austin, Texas.
Joining Johnson and McCutchin as 2021 Oklahoma defensive back recruits is Jordan Mukes, a safety, from Choctaw, Oklahoma, who committed to the Sooners at the end of March.
