5. Super-talented supporting cast
Oklahoma has been blessed in recent seasons with outstanding quarterback play, but the Sooners are far from being a one-man band. The Sooner quarterbacks receive most of the headlines, but they have been surrounded by a plethora of offensive weapons at the skill positions. While most teams want to be able to run the ball to set up their passing game, Oklahoma spreads the field and uses the dual-threat ability of its quarterback to open up the run game, and the balance in being able to run the ball and air it out effectively is what makes the Sooner offense so difficult to defend.
Protecting the quarterback and opening up holes for the running backs is the responsibility of the offensive line, and since Bill Bedenbaugh has been the offensive line coach at OU, the Sooners have had one of the best. Two years ago, the Oklahoma O-line was voted the best in college football, and this year’s crew could be in contention to make it twice in the last three seasons.
