Oklahoma basketball: Sooner hoops awards for a season that ended as March Sadness
By Chip Rouse
Best Newcomer — Austin Reaves
Austin Reaves played two seasons at Wichita State before transferring to Oklahoma, made his Sooner debut this season after sitting out the 2018-19 season because of the NCAA transfer rule. He opened the season with a 23-point performance in OU’s season opener and scored in double digits in his first 10 games in a Sooner uniform.
The 6-foot, 5-inch junior shooting guard scored fewer than 10 points just five times all season. Reaves started all 31 games for Oklahoma this season, averaging 14.7 points, 5.3 rebounds and 3.0 assists. He also was the Sooners best free-throw shooter, making 140 of 165 charity tosses for 85 percent.
If there was one disappointing facet in Reaves play this past season, it was three-point shooting. After shooting nearly 45 percent from long range in two seasons at Wichita State, Reaves was just 26 percent from three-point range this season (42 of 162).
While scoring 20 or more points seven times in 2019-20, Reaves literally saved the best for last, scoring a career-high 41 points in Oklahoma’s dramatic comeback win over TCU in what turned out to be the final game of the season.
