Oklahoma running back Trey Sermon is entering the transfer portal.

ESPN and multiple new sources reported on Saturday that Sermon, who played three seasons at OU, announced via twitter:

“I have enjoyed my three seasons as a Sooner and am looking forward to what’s next. After careful consideration, I have decided to enter the portal as a graduate transfer.”

The junior running back out of the state of Georgia played mostly in a backup role in the 2019 season, surrendering his starting role to sophomore Kennedy Brooks. Sermon recorded just 384 rushing yards and four touchdowns last season, less than half as many as the 947 yards and 13 TDs he posted the year before.

He played in 10 games in 2019 before suffering an ACL knee injury against Iowa State late in the season. He averaged 11 carries per game and 7.1 yards per carry last season.

In his three seasons at Oklahoma, Sermon rushed for a total of 2,076 yards, including 22 rushing TDs, and averaged 6.1 yards per carry.

Sermon’s best performance in the 2019 season was 76 rushing yards and three touchdowns (two rushing and one receiving) in a win over Texas Tech. His best game as a collegian was also against Texas Tech. He gained 206 rushing yards and scored three touchdowns in a 2018 game against the Red Raiders.

A leading reason why Sermon has decided to leave Oklahoma is likely his desire to be a starter in his final season of eligibility, and that was not expected to be the situation at OU, where Kennedy was No. 1 on the depth chart entering spring practice.

A probable landing spot for Sermon’s services is Ohio State. Brad Crawford, who writes for 247Sports, reported that Sermon attended Ohio State’s Friday Night Lights Camp as a four-star high school talent.

Sermon was an ESPN Top 100 prospect in the Sooners’ 2017 recruiting class.
