Two of the biggest Oklahoma football stars this season, quarterback Jalen Hurts and wide receiver CeeDee Lamb, are finalists for three major 2019 national awards.

Hurts, a graduate transfer from Alabama, is one of three finalists for both the Maxwell Award and the Davey O’Brien Award, and Lamb is a finalist for the Biletnikoff Award.

The Maxwell Award is presented annually to the best all-around player in college football. The Davey O’Brien Award recognizes the best quarterback in the country, and the Biletnikoff Award goes to the most outstanding receiver.

Hurts has produced 4,340 yards of offense (3,184 passing and 1,156 rushing), along with 47 touchdowns, this season for the No. 1 offensive team at the FBS (Football Bowl Subdivision) level. He leads the nation in yards per pass attempt (11.8; the FBS record is 11.6), yards per completion (16.6), points responsible per game (25.8) and total touchdowns, and ranks second in total offense (394.5 yards per game).

The Oklahoma quarterback is the only FBS player since 1996 to record a passing efficiency rating of 245.0 or better in five games in the same season and is one of only three players in FBS history to post at least 3,000 passing yards and at least 1,000 rushing yards 11 games into the season.

Hurts and Lamb headline an Oklahoma offense that leads the nation in total offense (574.7 yards per game) and yards per play (8.4).

Lamb is Hurts’ primary receiving target and with good reason. Lamb has made at least one touchdown catch in nine of 10 games this season. The consensus midseason All-American leads the country with 14 receiving touchdowns this season and an average 21.7 yards per catch. He also leads the nation’s non-seniors with 32 career receiving TDs and 2,964 career receiving yards.

The other two 2019 Maxwell Award finalists are LSU quarterback Joe Burrow and Ohio State defensive end Chase Young. Burrow and Justin Fields of Ohio State are the other two finalists, along with Hurts, for the Davey O’Brien Award.

Lamb is joined by Ja’Marr Chase of LSU and Michael Pittman Jr. of USC as finalists for the Biletnikoff Award.

Three former Sooners have won the Maxwell Award (Tommy McDonald in 1956, Jason White in 2004 and Baker Mayfield in 2017). Jason White (2003 and 2004), Sam Bradford (2008), Baker Mayfield (2017) and Kyler Murray (2018) are previous winners of the Davey O’Brien Award.

Dede Westbrook (2016) is the only Oklahoma player to win the Biletnikoff Award.
