Had the Oklahoma football team not squandered all but a single point of a 21-point fourth-quarter lead Saturday night against Iowa State, the Sooners probably wouldn’t have found themselves moving backward instead of forward in the new Associated Press Top 25.

Instead, OU dropped back one spot, to No. 10, in the Week 12 AP Poll and is now looking up to No. 7 Minnesota in addition to the eight other teams that were ranked ahead of them a week ago. Meanwhile, the Sooners remained in the No. 8 spot in the latest Coaches Poll.

While the AP and Coaches Polls are interesting to follow, but beginning last week, the only poll that really matters at this point in the season is the College Football Playoff rankings. Oklahoma stood ninth in the first Playoff rankings for 2019, and could find themselves lower after barely surviving at home against Iowa State. The new CFP Top 25 will be revealed Tuesday night.

LSU’s convincing win over Alabama, its fourth over a top-10 team this season, vaulted the Tigers to the top spot in both the AP and Coaches Polls this week. Ohio State, Clemson, Alabama and Georgia — three SEC teams — round out the top five in both polls.

Four Big 12 teams, headed by No. 10 Oklahoma, are ranked in the AP Poll this week. Baylor, the Sooners’ opponent this coming Saturday, are No. 12; Texas, a 27-24 winner over Kansas State over the weekend, returns to the rankings, at No. 22 in the AP Poll, and Oklahoma State moved into the No. 25 spot. Kansas State dropped out of the top 25 in both the AP and the Coaches Poll.

Like the Sooners, Baylor is two spots higher in the Coaches Poll, at No. 10, than in the AP Poll. Texas is ranked 23rd in the Coaches Poll this week. Oklahoma State received 49 votes in the Coaches Poll, which would rank them 26th in the balloting conducted by the coaches.

Not surprisingly, Minnesota, which remained undefeated after upsetting previously unbeaten and fifth-ranked Penn State, was the biggest upward mover in this week’s AP and Coaches Polls, advancing six spots in both polls.
