Oklahoma football: Sooners disclose 2020 gridiron schedule

For those among us who have been critics of the competitiveness — or lack thereof — of the 2019 Oklahoma football schedule, you can now direct your scrutiny to next season’s lineup of games.

On Tuesday, Oklahoma revealed its 2020 football schedule, which includes six home games, including four against Big 12 teams, and six road contests.

The Sooners will open the 2020 season at home against Missouri State. It will be the first-ever meeting between the two schools.

OU stays at home for Week 2, hosting the Tennessee Volunteers out of the SEC. The Sooners are 3-1 all-time against the Volunteers, including a sweep of the home-and-home series in 2014-15.

Week 3 will be a bye week as the Sooners prepare for a road challenge at Army on Sept. 26. OU won the first game in this home-and-home series in 2018, but it took overtime to do it, with OU winning 28-21.

October is a busy month for the Sooners with five Big 12 games on the schedule and three of them away from Gaylord Family — Oklahoma Memorial Stadium, including the annual Red River rivalry battle with Texas on Oct. 10 in Dallas. OU starts out the month with a home game on Oct. 3 against Baylor.

The week following the Red River Showdown (in which the Sooners are 19-1 the last 20 seasons), the Sooners travel to Iowa State, against whom OU has won 19 of the last 20, not counting the game still to be played in 2019 (on Nov. 9).

The game with Texas is one of two rivalry games for the Sooners in the month of October. The in-state Bedlam game with Oklahoma State will be a month earlier next season, with OU hosting the Cowboys on Oct. 24. The Sooners have won 14 of the last 16 Bedlam games held in Norman.

Oklahoma closes out October with an Oct. 31 road game at TCU, a venue where the Sooners have won eight of the last nine games.

The Sooners are on the road the following weekend, as well, traveling to West Virginia for a game on Nov. 7. OU hosts back-to-back games with the schools from the Sunflower State, Kansas State and Kansas, on Nov. 14 and 21, respectively.

The regular-season finale will take place against Texas Tech in Lubbock on either Nov. 27 on 28. The Big 12 will make the final determination on whether this game will be played on the Friday after Thanksgiving or on Saturday.
