The Oklahoma football Sooners held the No. 4 position in the Coaches Poll for six straight weeks in the weekly national rankings voted on by the coaches.

But the fact that OU has played a relatively easy schedule to this point in the season finally caught up with the Sooners in this week’s Coaches Poll.

LSU and Ohio State leapfrogged Oklahoma in the Associated Press Poll several weeks ago, and this week Ohio State jumped over OU into the No. 4 spot in the AP Poll, pushing the Sooners back to No. 5.

The Sooners have the same overall record as the teams that have passed them in the two major weekly polls, but OU’s schedule and five wins to date have not been considered that impressive in the eyes of the voting panels.

Oklahoma will have a chance next weekend to make a statement and address the concerns that some experts have about the true strength of this year’s Sooner team if it can get by archrival Texas in the annual Red River rivalry game in Dallas. Beat No. 11 Texas and you will have at least matched what LSU did earlier this season.

There is no change this week in the top two spots in both polls with Alabama and Clemson, both idle over the weekend, remaining one and two, respectively. Ohio State moved ahead of Georgia, to No. 3, in the AP Poll.

Oklahoma State, which was the only Big 12 school other than Oklahoma and Texas to be ranked last week, at No. 21 in the AP and No. 25 in the Coaches rankings, dropped out of both polls after being upset 45-35 by Texas Tech.

Baylor, on the other hand, broke into the top 25 for this first time this season following a 31-12 win at Kansas State 31-12 that improved the Bears to 5-0 on the season. Baylor is No. 22 in the AP Top 25 and No. 23 in the Coaches Poll.
