It wasn’t always pretty, but Oklahoma football took care of business on the road in a 45-20 win over Kansas.
A weather delay pushed the kickoff time back by a half hour, then the Sooners seemed to delay their own start,
After a rare Sooner punt, the Jayhawks marched 98 yards down the field largely behind the stellar running of Pooka Williams – who finished the game with 137 yards on 23 carries – to go up 7-0 in the first quarter. It was the first time the Sooners have trailed all year.
The Sooners responded, roaring to life to the tune of 42 consecutive points to put the game away early in the second half and bring on the second-stringers for most of the fourth quarter.
Jalen Hurts wasn’t at his best throwing the ball but shook off some early struggles to finish 16-of-24 passing for 228 yards and two touchdowns. He added 10 carries for 56 yards and two scores on the ground.
Hurts may very well have been near the century mark running the ball had it not been for a catastrophic loss on a failed trick play in the red zone that force the Sooners to bring on the punt team on a fourth and goal.
Only up 14-7 late in the half, the Oklahoma defense came up with a huge three-and-out to return the ball to the offense.
A 46-yard return from CeeDee Lamb set the Sooners up on the 10 yard line. Hurts found Lamb on the next play to make it 21-7 right before the break.
The Sooners locked the game down in the third quarter with scores and a series of stops on defense.
Running back Rhmondre Stevenson’s 61-yard rushing score with 10:45 to go in the game made it just a matter of time.
Stevenson finished with 109 yards on just five carries. Trey Sermon had 71 on 11. 13 different receivers caught passes for Oklahoma.
On defense Brian Asamoah, Ronnie Perkins and Pat Fields all came up with sacks.
