18-yard touchdown pass to Grant Calcatterra vs. Texas (second meeting)

Clinging to a five-point lead with less than 90 seconds to go in the game the Sooners faced a third-and-10 from their own 18 yard line. Many teams would have played it safe, ran the ball to set up Big 12 kicker Austin Seibert to make it an eight-point game. The Sooners decided to go for the jugular. Murray read at the line that Texas defensive back B.J. Foster was locked in one-on-one press coverage against his tight end Grant Calcaterra. Murray checked the safety, then lofted a pass where only his guy could get it. Calcaterra fought off the Texas defender with one hand and cradled the ball with the other, scoring the game-defining play for the Sooners and giving Oklahoma a two-score lead with just 1:06 left on the clock.

What it meant: Seibert’s previous field goal had dinged off the upright before eeking its way over the crossbar for three points. Had the Sooners settled for another field goal there’s no guarantee they would have gotten points out of it.  Even if they had, Texas had already broken the Sooners’ hearts in the game’s final minute once before this season and nobody wearing Crimson and Cream in that stadium wanted to see that game come down to the final possession. The corner fade route on third-and-10 isn’t a high-percentage throw, but Murray trusted his read and the hands of his sophomore tight end, who made a spectacular one-handed catch. The play sealed a fourth-straight Big 12 title for the Sooners, avenged their only loss to rival Texas and punched their ticket to the College Football Playoff. Oklahoma fans are hoping of course that this list is incomplete. The Sooners want two more games to collect highlights on what they are hoping is an eighth National Championship season.
