Oklahoma baseball: Sooners will play 12 NCAA Tournament teams in 2019

The University of Oklahoma baseball team will play a 56-game season in 2019, including 31 games against teams that competed in the NCAA postseason tournament last season.

The Sooners will open the 2019 season at home at L. Dale Mitchell Park on Feb. 15 with a three-game series against Cal Poly before heading to sunny Southern California to take part in the Tony Gwynn Classic, hosted by San Diego State.

In the first month of the season, Oklahoma will face San Diego, San Diego State and Cal State Fullerton in the Tony Gwynn Classic, host a four-game home series with Columbia and a three-game series against Missouri State, then go back on the road in mid-April for a three-game weekend series at Minnesota.

Columbia, Missouri State, San Diego State, Cal Fullerton and Minnesota are participated in NCAA postseason action a year ago, and Cal State Fullerton and Minnesota advanced to the Super Regionals.

"“The strength of our opponents will provide our young team opportunities to grow and be competitive throughout the season,” said OU coach Skip Johnson in a statement posted on the OU athletic website. Johnson is in his second season at Oklahoma."

The Sooners’ Big 12 schedule, which will open with three games at home against Kansas March 22-24, consists of eight, three-game weekend series. In addition to Kansas, Oklahoma will be at home to take on TCU and Texas Tech, as well as a single game with Oklahoma State as part of a weekend series that also will feature games in Tulsa and at the Brickyard in Oklahoma City.

Oklahoma also has games scheduled with Dallas Baptist, Oral Roberts and Texas Southern, all of which played postseason baseball last season.

Five Big 12 teams competed in postseason baseball in 2017, including the Sooners, Oklahoma, Baylor and Oklahoma State were eliminated in regional tournaments, Texas and Texas Tech hosted Super Regionals and advanced to the College World Series.

Oklahoma finished the 2017 season with an overall record of 38-25 and 14-10 in the Big 12, good for fourth place.
