The Oklahoma football win over Texas Tech on Saturday brought back memories of the epic 2016 shootout between the same two teams that featured a pair of All-Big 12 quarterbacks in OU’s Baker Mayfield and Patrick Mahomes of Texas Tech.

Neither player was on the field Saturday night in Lubbock, but fans of both teams will not soon forget the record-setting shootout those two quarterbacks were engaged in at Texas Tech’s Jones AT&T Stadium two seasons ago. Behind Mayfield, Oklahoma outlasted Mahomes and the Red Raiders 66-59. Aside from 125 points, the two offenses accounted for an NCAA-record 1,708 yards of total offense.

It was one of those games in which, literally, the team that possessed the ball last would win the game. Flashing forward two years, the game Saturday night, won by the Sooners 51-46, featured much of the same style of play and action, although with a different cast of participants.

Mayfield and Mahomes are now in the National Football League as starting quarterbacks of the Cleveland Browns and Kansas City Chiefs, respectively. On Sunday, the day after the Oklahoma victory at Texas Tech, the two faced each other as opposing quarterbacks for the third time in their collegiate-NFL careers.

Mayfield and the Sooners won the two college games (most fans forget that Mayfield and Mahomes were the quarterbacks when Texas Tech and OU played in Norman in 2015, with the Sooners winning big, 63-27), but on Sunday the two faced off against each other for the first time in their NFL. careers.

It was a different story on Sunday, with Mahomes leading the Chiefs to a 37-21 victory that wasn’t really as close as the final score indicated.

Mahomes completed 23 of 32 passes for 375 yards, three touchdowns and a quarterback rating of 93.3. For Cleveland, Mayfield was 29 of 42 through the air for 297 yards, two touchdowns and a QBR of 63.5. Both quarterbacks threw an interception and were sacked twice.

Mayfield took over the Browns’ starting quarterback duties in Week 3 of the season after Tyrod Taylor was injured. In his first NFL season, Mayfield has completed 60 percent of his pass attempts, with 10 touchdowns and seven interceptions and an overall quarterback rating of 81.45.

By comparison, Mahomes has become the darling of the NFL in his second season with the 8-1 Chiefs, who are tied with the Los Angeles Rams for the best record in the NFL after nine weeks.

Although this is Mshomes’ second NFL season, it is his first as the starter at quarterback. He leads the NFL in passing yards (2,901) and passing touchdowns (29) and has completed 66 percent of his passes. The former Texas Tech quarterback has thrown seven interceptions in nine games and owns a quarterback rating of 116.71.

Coming up on the losing end on Sunday, Mayfield is now 2-1 against his former Big 12 counterpart.
