Oklahoma football: What the Spencer Rattler ruling means for the Sooners

Oklahoma football commit Spencer Rattler will miss the rest of his high school football senior season after an undisclosed incident.

Phoenix Pinnacle (Ariz.)’s Spencer Rattler, a five-star quarterback commit for the Sooners, violated the district code of conduct according to a statement from his father Mike Rattler provided to Azcentral.com.

Rattler is Arizona’s all-time leader in passing yards and the only high school player in the state’s history to surpass 11,000 yards through the air in a career.

He committed to Oklahoma last July and has been a key catalyst on the recruiting trial since, helping the Sooners secure the No. 5-ranked class according to Rivals.com.

Lincoln Riley has been made aware of the situation according to a report form Azcentral.com. The University of Oklahoma has not released a statement and likely won’t, as commenting on committed unsigned recruits is against NCAA bylaws.

Rattler is ranked the No. 1 dual-threat quarterback in the 2019 class according to both Rivals and 247sports and the only quarterback recruit for the Sooners in this class.

He is a candidate to ink his commitment to Oklahoma during the early signing period, which runs Dec. 19-21. With the likely departure of Kyler Murray at the end of the season to play baseball he figured to play a role in the derby to find the Sooners’ 2019 starting quarterback.

While this is certainly a setback for Rattler, as his team in contention for a state championship in his senior year, the violation isn’t likely to have any bearing on his recruiting or future with the Sooners provided there are no future problems.

“There is nothing on his permanent record,” Spencer’s father Mike  Rattler told Azcentral.com. “We discussed everything with Coach Riley. It’s a dumb thing and it happened. He’s a good kid. He’s never been in trouble. He has a 3.8 GPA”

The Sooners will likely move forward with the current information and work toward getting Rattler on campus and in the Oklahoma system, but Rattler is likely on thin ice as Oklahoma doesn’t want to bring baggage into the program going forward.
