The season premiere of Hard Knocks on HBO may have been enough to help whet the appetite of those eager to see former Oklahoma football star and Heisman winner Baker Mayfield, but Thursday night’s preseason game should provide even more sustenance for the football-starved Sooner fan.

Mayfield will make his NFL debut with the Cleveland Browns against the New York Giants in a game with multiple storylines.

The two-time former walk on and No. 1 overall draft pick should see action midway through the first quarter according to reports and could play as much as two quarters, giving the Browns’ coaching staff a chance to see what their quarterback can do in a live game situation – according to a report from Scott Petrak of  Elyria Chronicle-Telegram.

The game features three of the top four picks in the 2018 NFL draft in Mayfield, the Giants’ Saquon Barkley (No. 2 overall) and the Browns’ Denzel Ward (No. 4 overall).

In addition it will be a reunion of sorts for Mayfield and Giants’ wide receiver Sterling Shephard. Mayfield and Shephard were teammates in 2015 and their ability to connect for big plays helped propel Oklahoma to a Big 12 Championship and a College Football Playoff appearance.

Mayfield will have a chance to hand off to fellow rookie Nick Chubb. Sooner fans probably last saw the former Georgia running back (unless they have repressed that memory) running all over the Oklahoma defense in the 2018 Rose Bowl. If they can stomach it, they will now have a chance let bygones be bygones and root for Chubb as he lines up behind Mayfield in the backfield.

Though Mayfield has impressed early on, coaches are insisting the starting quarterback job isn’t up for grabs at this point and Tyrod Taylor will be the Browns’ No. 1 signal caller come opening day. Still Mayfield appears to the be franchise’s future at the position and should gain some valuable experience as the Browns progress through the offseason.

The Browns and Giants kick off at 6 p.m. on the NFL Network.
