Baker Mayfield: What’s the former OU bad boy been up to lately?

Former OU superstars Baker Mayfield and Trae Young and current Sooner star Kyler Murray all have something in common: All were top-10 draft picks this spring.

Young was the No. 5 overall selection in Thursday’s NBA Draft, and a week earlier, Murray staked his claim to a professional baseball career after being selected by the Oakland A’s with the ninth overall pick in this year’s Major League Baseball amateur draft.

We’ve written quite a bit about Murray and Young in recent days, for obvious reasons. This prompted me to wonder what has been happening with Mayfield, as he transitions to life as a rookie in the National Football League after becoming the fourth Oklahoma player to be drafted in the No. 1 position in the 2018 NFL Draft. The Cleveland Browns selected the 2017 Heisman Trophy winner with the first overall pick in this year’s draft.

Mayfield has been in Cleveland going through rookie mini camp and organized team activities with the Browns. He is not expected to start the new NFL season at quarterback for the Browns. That job is likely to go to Tyrod Taylor, who the Browns picked up from the Buffalo Bills after last season.

In an article this week by Dan Justik, contributor to FanSided’s Dogpounddaily.com, a website covering the Cleveland Browns, Justik quoted Browns’ offensive coordinator Todd Haley as saying Mayfield “has a long way to go.” The two-time Big 12 Player of the Year will sit an learn behind Taylor as he adjusts to the NFL game.

Mayfield has also been busy lately working the sports talk-show circuit. He made guest appearances this week on FS1’s “The Herd with Colin Cowherd” and “Undisputed,” with Skip Bayless and Shannon Sharpe. (Click here to read about Mayfield’s comments on both programs.)

Colin Cowherd has been an outspoken critic of Mayfield and his NFL prospects even before the NFL Draft was held in late April. Cowherd recently tweeted this about Mayfield:

"“Marginal size and athleticism, isn’t a NUMBER ONE pick, in any draft, in any sport.”"

To which Mayfield responded:

"“Well, it happened, Bud. Have a nice day!”"

The former Oklahoma quarterback appeared on Cowherd’s show wearing a sweatshirt bearing his bandana-ed  “BM” logo over the word “Undraftable.”

Mayfield is also working on a TV documentary, “All the Way Up: Baker Mayfield,” a behind the scenes look at the NFL Draft process and the OU quarterback’s experience and preparation going through it. The documentary is scheduled to air on Fox, beginning July 29.
