The under-10 countdown to the 2017 Oklahoma football season is underway with nine days to go before the season-opening kickoff against the University of Texas-El Paso.

Speaking of the No. 9, something tells me Sooner fans are going to be seeing that jersey number a lot on offense, if not this coming season then for sure the years immediately following.

Wearing the No. 9 Sooner jersey this season is freshman wide receive Cedarian Lamb, who goes by the nickname “CeeDee.” Lamb is one of four four-star wide receivers in Oklahoma’s top-10 2017 recruiting class.

Freshman players typically don’t see much playing time in their first college season, but Lamb is not your typical recruit.

Rivals.com rated Lamb as the No. 72 overall player in the county, the 16th-best receiver in the 2017 national class and the 15th best player in the recruiting-rich state of Texas. Sooner coaches say he is gifted in every aspect of the game and see him as a potential star for the Sooners.

“CeeDee is a playmaker, man. This man catches any ball that comes his way.” –Graduate transfer WR Jeff Badet on CeeDee Lamb

As a senior In high school last fall in Richmond, Texas (in the Houston area), Lamb caught 98 passes for 2,032 yards, fourth most in state history, and 33 touchdowns, tied for second most in state history.

Jeffery Mead, a senior wide receiver who is expected to be one of the Sooners’ leading receiving targets this season, told Brooke Pryor, OU beat writer for the Oklahoma City Oklahoman, at training camp this week, “I’m glad I wasn’t a freshman when he (Lamb) got here.

“The kid is very talented,” Mead said. “He should make a lot of plays for us.”

Graduate transfer Jeff Badet, who joins the Oklahoma receiving corps from Kentucky, echoed Mead’s praise of the young freshman receiver, who is more like a lion than a lamb on the football field. “CeeDee is a playmaker, man,” said Badet. “This man catches any ball that comes his way.”

Incidentally, Lamb is in good company among former Sooner players who have worn the No. 9 jersey: WR Mark Clayton (2001-04), WR Juaquin Iglesias (2005-08) and Trevor Knight (2013-15)
