fter finishIn a match that extended all the way to the final pairing and one extra hole after that, the men’s Oklahoma golf team outdueled Baylor in match play to advance to the semifinals of the NCAA Men’s Golf Championship at Rich Harvest Farms in Sugar Grove, Ill.

With Oklahoma’s quarterfinals match with familiar Big 12 foe Baylor all square at two apiece, it came down to the outcome of the final pairing between OU’s Brad Dalke and Matthew Perrine of Baylor. The two battled back and forth over the final nine holes. Perrine chipped in an 18-footer from the fringe on the 18th hole to square the match and send it to a sudden death playoff.

Dalke drained a six-foot putt on the playoff hole to win his match with Perrine and give the Sooners a 3-2 victory over the Bears.

At one point in the overall match with Baylor, Oklahoma trailed in all five pairings.

OU, which finished second behind Vanderbilt in the 72-hole stroke-play portion of the NCAA team championship, will now go head-to-head with the No. 7-seed, Illinois, which won its Tuesday morning quarterfinals match against top-seeded USC. Defending national champion Oregon will be paired against Vanderbilt in the other semifinal match.

This is the second consecutive season the Sooners have advanced to match play in the NCAA Championship. The match play component to the championship was introduced in 2009.

Oklahoma has one national championship in college golf. The Sooners won the 1989 NCAA national championship after finishing second the year before. In only one other year has Oklahoma finished as high as second place in the NCAA Men’s Golf Championship. That was back in 1938.
