Patti Gasso’s Lady Sooners Softball Team Wins Third National Title
Behind the golden arm of sophomore pitcher Paige Parker, Oklahoma won its third Women’s College World Series title in 2016, defeating Auburn two games to one in the championship series.
Parker won an NCAA-best 38 games and was the losing pitcher just three times in 2016. Following her five-hit, complete-game performance against Auburn in the deciding game of this year’s WCWS, Parker was named the Most Outstanding Player.
Oklahoma put together a 31-game winning streak during the season. The win streak was snapped in Game 2 of the WCWS championship final, when Auburn came back from a 7-0 deficit to beat the Sooners 11-7 and square the championship at a game apiece. OU ended the season with a 57-8 record, after starting out 0-2.
In this year’s WCWS, the Sooners outscored their opponents 63-33.
Eight players on Oklahoma’s 2016 roster were freshman, and four were sophomores, which puts the Sooners in a very good position for the next couple of years.
The Sooners also won NCAA softball championships in 2013 and 200O. Oklahoma’s 22 wins in the Women’s College World Series are the fifth most in NCAA softball history.
