In 121 years of collegiate competition, Oklahoma football has faced 136 different opponents.
Against teams they have played more than three times, the Sooners have a losing record against only five teams.
That is a fairly amazing statistic when you take some time to fully absorb the significance.
The Sooners longest running series, perhaps not surprisingly, are against their biggest rivals: Texas and Oklahoma State. Texas and Oklahoma began their Red River rivalry on the football field back in 1900. This season will mark the 111th game in that active rivalry series. This also will be the 111th year for the in-state rivalry with Oklahoma State, although that series did not commence until four years after the OU-UT inaugural game.
Here’s something that may catch you off guard, however: Oklahoma’s longest series against a team outside of its conference is with an obscure school named Kingfisher (Okla.) College. a small religion-based institution that was located approximately 60 miles northwest of Norman.
The Sooners never lost to Kingfisher, winning 19 of the total 22 games they played in the series between 1897 and 1919. The other three games ended in ties. The two schools in all likelihood would have scheduled even more games together, except that Kingfisher College ceased operation in 1922.
So who are the five schools that Oklahoma has played more than just a few times in football and has failed to master? Here they are, the Sooners’ toughest opponents all-time:
