No team in college football is immune from off-the-field issues. Off the field run-ins with the law are becoming frighteningly more frequent, and Oklahoma football is the latest national brand to make headlines because of the unlawful actions of one of its players.

Several media sources are reporting that starting defensive back Jordan Thomas was arrested early Thursday morning by the Cleveland County Sheriffs office on charges of assault and battery. public intoxication and interference. The arrest was made at 2:45 a.m.

Thomas, who will be a junior this fall, unfortunately has had off-the-field issues before. He was suspended on two occasions last season and was held out of the Tulsa game early in the 2015 season, when head coach said he was letting the team down.

This is clearly not good news for an Oklahoma team that is expected to be a prime contender for a return trip to the College Football Playoff in the 2016 season.

Head coach Bob Stoops was not immediately available for comment, but it would be surprising if the head coach of the Sooners for the past 17 seasons does not take swift and stern action to deal with this issue. The OU head coach has made it abundantly clear in the past that no one individual, no matter how important or talented he may be, is bigger than the team.

The 6-foot, 187-pound cornerback played in 12 of the Sooners’ 13 games last season, 11 of them as a starter. He was named All-Big 12 First Team by ESPN.com and to the second team by the league coaches and Phil Steele, a college football expert and publisher of a widely acclaimed college football preview magazine.

Thomas was arrested last December for failure to make a court appearance on a speeding violation last July, when he was reportedly going 94 miles per hour in a 75-mph zone.

In the 2015 season, the OU junior cornerback had 46 tackles and five interceptions, two of which came in the Sooners’ 58-23 blowout win over Oklahoma State last season in the final regular season game.
