Week five Big 12 Power Rankings: Oklahoma runs wild, Kansas State falls short

facebooktwitterreddit

Most of the Big 12 took week four off, but the Sooners, Mountaineers, Wildcats, and Jayhawks were all in play.

Nothing came easy to any team playing, and our week five Big 12 power rankings saw no movement. However, here’s what others and we had to say about week four of the college football season.

1. Oklahoma Sooners (4-0) • Prev. Rank: #1

The Sooners ran wild in Morgantown. Or at least Samaje Perine did. West Virginia had OU on the ropes, but the Sooners asserted themselves as the most impressive team in the Big 12 this season.

2. Baylor Bears (3-0) • Prev. Rank: #2

Bye week for Baylor, but it’s basically been a month-long bye week for the Bears, who have rolled through their non-conference slate.

3. TCU Horned Frogs (2-0) • Prev. Rank: #3

Bye week for TCU, and I’m not sure we’ll learn much from their next game against SMU.

4. Kansas State Wildcats (2-1) • Prev. Rank: #4

They came so close…so close to upsetting Auburn. However, the Wildcats were unsuccessful in their Thursday night upset bid. Here are some words from SB Nation’s Kansas State Wildcats blog’s, Bring on the ‘Cats, post game recap:

"“It was the most un-Wildcat game in ages. Had you been told that through three quarters, K-State would only allow Auburn’s lightning-fast offense to score 10 points, you’d have happily taken it and rushed straight to the afterparty. But turnovers, mistakes, and a complete inability to capitalize on opportunities — all of which are completely foreign concepts to a Bill Snyder team — doomed the Wildcats to another heartbreak.”"

5. Oklahoma State Cowboys (2-1) • Prev. Rank: #5

Bye week for the Pokes, but they’ll get Texas Tech Thursday night.

6. West Virginia Mountaineers (2-2) • Prev. Rank: #6

West Virginia had a shot at knocking off fourth-ranked Oklahoma, but it all fell apart in the second half. Tough break for WVU. But don’t take my word for it. Here is an excerpt from SB Nation’s West Virginia Mountaineers blog’s, Smoking Musket, post game recap:

"“This game was certainly not one WVU expected to win. It represented a great opportunity to make a splash on the national stage and start whispers of competing for a conference championship, but really it was a measuring stick. Well, we learned was that Oklahoma is very, very, very good and WVU just isn’t quite there yet and has to play near flawless ball to compete at that level.”"

7. Texas Longhorns (1-2) • Prev. Rank: #7

Bye week for the Longhorns….who are still 1-2.

8. Texas Tech Red Raiders (2-1) • Prev. Rank: #8

Bye week, but they’ll get Oklahoma State Thursday night after the week off.

9. Iowa State Cyclones (1-2) • Prev. Rank: #9

Bye week for the Cyclones, but they’ll host Baylor in Ames Saturday, which is set for a primetime kick-off.

10. Kansas Jayhawks (2-1) • Prev. Rank: #10

The Jayhawks won!….against Central Michigan. I wasn’t able to watch the game (thankfully), however, he’s an excerpt from SB Nation’s Kansas Jayhawks blog’s, Rock Chalk Talk, post game recap:

"“It was an uninspiring win against an uninspiring opponent.  I guess we should be thankful we even got the win, as this is only the third win against an FBS opponent with Charlie Weis at the helm.  The offense was stagnant most of the game, but at least the defense seemed to return to form.”"
