It turns out, the spring game isn’t just for the current crop of Oklahoma football players, it’s also a fly trap to reel in future Sooners.

On the eve of the 2018 edition of the annual Red-White spring game, 1,000-plus of former OU head coach Bob Stoops’ friends, former players and coaches came together to celebrate Stoops’ Sooner legacy. Meanwhile, current head coach Lincoln Riley, himself a Stoops hiree, was busy planning and building for the future.

Riley took the opportunity of the spring game weekend to announce commitments from three 2019 recruits and one for 2020.

During the afternoon on Friday, Oklahoma received verbal commitments from two five-star wide receivers and a four-star safety as members of the Sooners’ 2019 recruiting class.

The two five-star receivers are not actually new commitments to the Sooners. Arjei Henderson and Theo Wease, both out of the state of Texas, originally committed to Oklahoma on Feb. 19, 2017, the Oklahoma City Oklahoman reported. The pair decommitted from the Sooners in April of last year, along with four-star quarterback prospect Cameron Rising, who switched his commitment to Texas.

Both wide receiver prospects reopened their recruiting, but did not commit to another program, instead electing to stay with their original recruiting decision and go with the Sooners.

Wease, from Allen, Texas, is the No, 3 player overall in the Rivals 100 and the top-rated player at the position. Rivals ranks Henderson, from Richmond, Texas, the No. 6 player overall in the 2019 recruiting class. Both were heavily recruiting by multiple major programs, including Alabama, Arizona, Texas, Texas A&M and LSU.

Also on Friday afternoon, four-star safety Jamal Morris, who also hails from the same hometown as Henderson, made it a threesome of new Oklahoma commitments to the 2019 class.

The commitments from Henderson, Wease and Morris brings the 2019 OU recruiting class to seven currently, still very early in the process. Rivals ranks the Sooners’ 2019 class No. 2 at this time, behind Ole Miss. The class includes two five-stars, four four-stars and one three-star prospect. All but one are from Texas; the other from Arizona.

And OU still wasn’t done reeling in commitments on Friday. That evening, running back Jaylan Knighton announced his commitment for the 2020 Sooner class.
