While most of the fan attention in winter college sports has been on basketball, the men’s and women’s Oklahoma gymnastics squads have been busy rolling over every opponent and dominating every competition they have entered.

Both the OU men’s and women’s squads went through the regular season undefeated. For the men, this is the third consecutive season they have gone through the regular season undefeated.

The Sooner women just captured their sixth successive Big 12 Conference championship, and are now headed to NCAA regional competition as the No. 1 overall seed. Oklahoma is hoping to repeat its national championship of a year ago in NCAA women’s gymnastics, and the Sooners are in excellent position to make that happen with collective team strength as well as in the individual event competition.

Ironically, K.J. Kindler’s women’s squad will begin its journey to repeat as national champion at Alaska Airlines Arena in Seattle, the same venue where the Oklahoma women’s basketball competed in rounds one and two of the NCAA Women’s Basketball Championship this past weekend, defeating Gonzaga in the opening round before falling to No. 3-seed Washington on Monday.

The OU men are reigning national champions two years running and hoping to make it a three-peat later this spring. In total, the Sooners own 10 national championships in men’s gymnastics.

Because is the only school in the Big 12 that competes in men’s gymnastics, the Sooners compete in a conference – the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation – that includes schools outside of the Big 12, including Stanford, Air Force and California.

The MPSF Gymnastics Championship will be held April 8 at the University of California in Berkley. The Sooners have won the past five MPSF championships.

Currently, the Sooner men gymnasts rank first in the conference in every event as a team and also have the top-ranked individual in all six events (pommel horse, rings, vault, parallel bars, high bar and floor exercise).

Only two schools in the MPSP, OU and Stanford, have scored better than 425 total team points this season. The Sooners have accomplished that in all eight competition dates this season.

The NCAA Men’s Gymnastics Championship will be held April 21-22 at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, N.Y., where the Sooners will be heavy favorites to repeat.
