Oklahoma Basketball on Rebound: Notable Numbers From Sixth Straight Defeat at Iowa State

A trip to Iowa State is not advised for a team trying to snap an extended losing streak. But that was the challenge facing the men’s Oklahoma basketball team on Saturday, and the result, sadly, was fairly predictable.

The Sooners made a couple of double-digit runs to get back in the game after going down by nine points twice in the opening half, but in the end, Iowa State had too much experience and senior firepower to overcome.

Oklahoma (8-16, 2-10) dropped its seventh consecutive game for the second time this season and now has lost 14 of its last 16 contests in what has been a very frustrating and disappointing season for the Sooners and there fans.

The loss assured OU of a non-winning season, and unless the Sooners run the table over their final six regular-season games, they are destined for their worst season under sixth-year head coach Lon Kruger.

What the Sooner men benefited from the last couple of years, having the likes of Buddy Hield, Isaiah Cousins and Ryan Spangler for three and four seasons is taking its toll this season with almost a dozen players on the roster being in their first or second season with very little, if any, prior playing time at the collegiate level.

Oklahoma is having difficulty reaching 70 points in a game, and that’s not going to win many games in a conference with as much talent on offense as any league in the country. The last time the Sooners scored more than 70 points in a game was six games back when they scored 83 on the road against Texas.

Some numbers of note from Saturday’s game at Iowa State:

4 – Turnovers by Iowa State against Oklahoma, compared with 14 by the Sooners that resulted in 17 Cyclone points.

6:58 – The clock time in the second half when senior Jordan Woodard went down with what now has been diagnosed with a tear of his anterior cruciate ligament, likely ending his collegiate career.

7 – Number of blocked shots by Iowa State players against Oklahoma.

9 – Points by OU reserve point guard Darrion Strong-Moore, whose father, Adrian Moore, played for Iowa State from 1986-90.

12 – Number of consecutive games OU’s Kameron McGusty has scored in double digits, the longest such streak by any Big 12 freshman this season.

14-5 – Oklahoma’s margin of second-chance points vs. the Cyclones.

26 – Khadeem Lattin’s rebound total for the past two games. That represents the highest two-game total in his career.

46.2 – Shooting percentage by Iowa State for all field-goal attempts (30 of 65) as well as three-point tries (12 of 26).

47 – Oklahoma rebounds on Saturday vs. Iowa State, the Sooners second-most this season. OU’s 15-rebound margin (47-32) was the most this season.

471 – Jordan Woodard had one assist against Iowa State. That gives him 471 dimes for his Sooners career, tying him for fourth place all-time at OU with Ricky Grace.
