The 2016 season of Oklahoma football has begun like four others ended in recent years: High expectations unfulfilled.

It’s true that we’re only at the quarter pole of the Sooners’ 2016 season, but the team that started out as the No. 3 ranked team in the country is now completely out of the Associated Press Top 25.

Oklahoma and LSU, both of which began the season in the top 10, dropped out of the AP Top 25 this week to make room for Boise State and TCU, the Sooners next opponent. OU would like nothing more than to return the favor to the Horned Frogs this time next week.

The Sooners dropped from No. 3 to No. 14 after their season-opening loss to Houston and fell all the way down to No. 25 after losing to then No. 4 Ohio State.

Based on the votes for Week 5, Oklahoma is No. 27 in the AP poll and 29th in this week’s Amway Coaches Poll.

Three Big 12 teams are ranked this week in the AP poll. Baylor is the highest-ranked school from the Big 12, at No. 13. The Texas Longhorns, whom Oklahoma plays the week after next, is No. 22 this week, preceded by TCU at No. 21.

The top seven teams in the AP poll remain the same as the previous week: Alabama, Ohio State, Louisville, Michigan, Clemson, Houston and Stanford. All are undefeated through three or four games.

The last time the Sooners fell outside of the Top 25 was the final poll in the 2014 season. The Sooners lost to Oklahoma State in their regular-season finale that year and then were hammered by Clemson in the postseason.

Only Ohio State has been ranked No. 1 more times in the AP poll than Oklahoma.
