OU Player Evaluation: Jed Barnett

Jed Barnett, Punter
2013 Stats: 47 Punts, 41.7 average, long of 56, accumulated 2,711 yards

As far as punter productivity goes, Jed Barnett had a decent year out on the field this season. Some games he was featured more than others due to the inconsistencies of the offense, but overall he only averaged 3.6 punts per game at the conclusion of the 2013 season.

He had multiple 50+ yard long punts during the season, forcing the offenses of Alabama, Baylor, Iowa State, Louisiana-Monroe, Texas, Texas Tech, and West Virginia to try to make up that yardage.

His overall average is decent for a punter. The only criticism I could have for him is to increase that 41.7 yard per punt average (though, part of this is OU’s offense being stalled in enemy territory).

Increasing his range would help, however he also needs those on punt coverage to capitalize on the increased range.

Special Teams wasn’t much of an issue this year, and I don’t see it being an issue next season with Barnett and Hunnicutt returning to Norman.
