Michael Hunnicutt broke the Oklahoma Sooners’ record for most field goals in a career against the TCU Horned Frogs when he hit his 49th field goal. He broke a tie he was in with both Tim Duncan and Tim Lashar. He hit one more and sits alone at the top with 50.

One of the roughest spots for Bob Stoops’ Sooners teams has been the field goal kickers. Outside of Duncan, Stoops has seen kickers disappoint him year after year. He often pulls the string and yanks a kicker and has been known to utilize two, and on at least one occasion, three kickers in a year trying to find someone who can get him the results he wants.

In the press conference after the TCU win, Stoops showed an uncharacteristic pride and joy when a reporter asked about his kicker.

“Michael was awesome, and I guess he broke the record right? He has more field goals than anyone in the history of OU,” Stoops said. “That’s awesome. Michael is one of our captains now. He’s solid. Grant Bothun and Austin Woods too, you don’t take that for granted. The snaps and holds, they’ve done a great job. We have needed all those points in these games and he has been great.”

The fact that Michael Hunnicutt is one of the team captains now is proof positive that Bob Stoops finally has a kicker he can be proud of. Over his career, he has 50 field goals in 58 attempts and has made at least two field goals or more in the past six Sooners’ games.
