News of Tony Jefferson’s decision to leave school early is nothing less than disappointing for the Oklahoma defense. Mike Stoops’ secondary was the strongest part of an otherwise weak defensive unit, but SoonerNation’s Bob Przybylo reports that three-star safety Ahmad Thomas will enroll early at Oklahoma.

The Miami product has been committed since May of 2012, and turned down offers from Auburn, Florida, and Notre Dame. Thomas is a quality defensive back, who plays well in zone coverage and has good instincts according to ESPN.
Oklahoma’s defense certainly needs all the help they can get. It could be a rough season for Mike Stoops as this team tries to rebuild. 2012’s group brought no flashbacks of the old Mike Stoops defenses, but that will come in time as he gets his own players.
Hopefully, Thomas can come in and learn the system this spring and be ready for the start of next season. As mentioned, the Sooners lose Jefferson and Javon Harris will graduate, so Thomas could see solid playing time his first year on campus.
He’s a bit underrated with only a three-star Rivals and ESPN rating, but will have the opportunity to make an impact early. Praying this is a good omen for the secondary.
