The Stoops Era has been filled with Big 12 championships. Unfortunately, it is unlikely the Sooners will capture another conference crown in 2012.
Following Kansas State’s 23-10 win over Texas Christian, OU’s Big 12 titles hopes have become very slim. While the Sooners still control their destiny somewhat, a Big 12 title would have guaranteed them a spot in a BCS bowl.
Now K-State has not won the conference just yet. The Wildcats are close, though.
A win next week against Baylor would clinch the Big 12 for Snyder’s ball club. Though, if by some miracle the Wildcats were to lose their final two games, OU would take the 2012 Big 12 crown. That is assuming OU can win out.
Which at this point, is not a guarantee. OU still has to travel to Morgantown, WV and Fort Worth, TX, as well as Bedlam, which is in Norman.
The Sooners will definitely need a better defensive showing if they want to stop the Mountaineers and Cowboys. And the offense can not afford to sputter this late in the season against a tough TCU Horned Frog defense.
But as long as they do win out, OU should find themselves in New Orleans or Glendale this bowl season. They should still face a quality opponent, so maybe there isn’t that much of a panick to win the Big 12.
Though, if the Sooners somehow did win the conference, it would not be the first time OU got some late season help to be put in a position to win the Big 12. Who could forget the 2006 season when Texas collapsed and let the South slip away to Oklahoma?
So with just three weeks, the Big 12 seems out of reach for the Sooners. Kansas State just needs one more win to take the conference for the first time since they beat OU in the 2003 Big 12 Championship Game. However, while there is still some hope remaining, Kansas State has the conference all but wrapped up.
