Better start learning to properly pronounce Amath M’Baye now, sportscasters. The French native sat out his one year as a transfer from Wyoming and will be unleashed in Lonny Kruger’s second season with Oklahoma.
Now I remember the announcement when Oklahoma got some forward from Wyoming. Then for some odd reason, M’Baye thought it was a good idea to follow me on Twitter. Now, roughly a month before the start of college basketball season, M’Baye was named the preseason Big 12 Newcomer of the Year.
Honestly, these awards are kind of bogus for any sport. They are simply a way for fans to get excited about their team and boost their optimism that so-and-so made a preseason list.
Though, M’Baye is definitely a player fans will want to see, and Oklahoma has a solid shot at competing in the Big 12 this season. Kruger has the team headed for success, and some think these Sooners can go dancing.
Those may be lofty goals, but with M’Baye, along with Stephen Pledger and Romero Osby who received conference preseason recognition as well, Oklahoma has the tools to get the invite to March Madness. M’Baye can hopefully live up to the preseason award.
